In the European Union environment, according to data from Eurostat, 96.2% of agricultural holdings in the 28 states are farms of a family nature.
This means that of 10.8 million of these activities, almost 10.4 are family members.
What is a family farm? In 2014, FAO declared it the International Year of Family Farming.
It is in this framework that the definition of family farms is established as ".... that agricultural exploitation that is managed and operated by a family and where labor force is provided by the same family ".
